Bishop’s Hull Flower, Fruit and Vegetable Show

The Bishop’s Hull flower show has been one of, if not ‘the’ longest running event in the village. It has been running for, we think, over 100 years. I have attached a schedule from 1925 page 1 and page 2 and that was 85 years ago. The secretary of the show was C.H.Payne at Milligan Cottage and he was Gardener/chauffer to Sir Geofrey Farrant. He was well known in the village and I knew him as Charlie Payne. I have submitted a photo of him with his wife at Milligan Cottage, Bishop’s Hull. I knew also Sir Geofrey Farrant and he presented me with a book at Bishop’s Hull School in the 40’s.

The show is held the second week of August each year. I have been secretary to the show for certainly 16 years and I have seen some changes.

We are blessed with a good support from the villagers and we have a healthy and forward-looking committee, but younger members are always sought after.

There are a few village stalwarts who turn out every year to help, they are not members but realise the need and they are very much appreciated by the committee.

This will be the fourth year of our scarecrow competition, which is fairly well supported, we usually get around 18 scarecrows and these are judged from the road on the first Sunday prior to the show.

Anyone wishing to help or join us would be made most welcome.

Roy Baker.
